Painted in Chicago, IL, January 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 "(background)", 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, (January memo, received $150 from Mr. Adams), February 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, (received $50 from Mr. Adams), 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 (drapery), 15, 16, 17, "portrait OK.", 18. To EHS, December 21, 1927, "I am anxious to do a portrait in Chicago and am making efforts to get one there. . . . I am brighter than I used to be and am therefore going to take another try a what was formerlly [sic] an unhappy and unccesful business." To EHS, January 14, 1928, "Going to tea at Mrs. Adams this PM, discuss what to wear etc; in her mother's house in a large room good for studio [she] says. To EHS, January 23, "Portrait goiing well & liked (so far)." To EHS, February 13, "Portrait most done - " Portrait was a commission piece done when ED wanted work in Chicago while courting FF who was visiting there. Letter to FF[D], February 17, ED wrote of the "successful conclusion" of the portrait, the Adams were pleased and offered to "secure me a sitter at any time." They were most cordial. But something was wrong, the portrait in was fact not liked and not fully paid for.
