Notes

Painted in Lancieux, Brittany, France, July 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 (journal), upstairs in Helen's room in the Dickinson's rented farm house. In 1938 Journal ED referred to it as "Composition;" on back of an old photo it was called "Unfinished Girl in Purple" and "Illustration for Ulysses." In Joyce's Ulysses, Cissy was one of the two girls with Gerty McCaffrey. FD was reading Ulysses aloud in the in the evenings p. 360. June 18, 1939, in Sheldrake, painted on 20F, girl in purple, from Lancieux.
