Notes

Notes: Painted in Sheldrake, NY, September 2 - 27. First titled "Composition with Sailors." The scene is imaginary but the landscape is very "Sheldrake" in character.

To EHS, April 24, 1927, "Much pleased that you like the Inland Lake, thats [sic] the kind of piece I like."

To EHS, 27 Secember 1960: Regardiing the Graham Retrospective:"Space presses in the gallery; do not therefore send the 40 x 40 of 1919 of the sailors etc "Inland Lake". The complete compositional lack in the piece bothered me when I was doing it. By Jove ! But I couldn't fix it - that'a an effect of 'subject-matter.'"
