Painted in Sheldrake, NY, at Dickinson cottage. ED called the elm in the background, "The Bach Tree," writing "When I rested, [while painting White Chair] I would pick up my fiddle hanging on the elm and commit a few bars of a J.S.B. [Bach] doubles to memory - "
