Notes

Painted in Truro, MA, June 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 29 (journal), former Congregational church on Corn Hill. Cut down by ED from 36x30." ED worked at this abandoned and crumbling church with painter Raymond Eastwood, [1898-?] also painting its tower, now lost. Letters to his fiancČe, Frances (Pat) Foley, convey his emotional involvement with this romantic ruin: sounds of plaster falling, most window panes gone, kingfishers and woodpeckers flying about "and my easel was set in pew #52 !" "For all its appearance it might not have been entered in half a century. But the traveler would now not quite think that for in the choir seats is a wet oil on canvas with my name on the back." "I played the melodian in the dark prayer meeting room under a gold sign `No Cross, No Crown.'" [Title of book by William Penn].
